Old art dump 2 - Vorkosigan Saga
Dec. 19th, 2018 09:03 pmLet's be honest, it's mostly Bel.

A Mirror Dance Bel, because I love this tea-drinking, nightie-wearing dork. I have a lot of thoughts about one of the recurring themes in the Vorkosigan Saga, which is the balancing act of being a woman, and of femininity as something subject to constant and unwelcome scrutiny.
I might write up those thoughts at some point, but in the meantime, I just wanted to say that I love how that repeatedly manifests in Strong Female Characters (though in this case, not exclusively female) wearing extremely frivolous nighties.

Elena and Cordelia; neither looking quite as I picture them to be honest. Symptom of sameface syndrome, and defaulting to a very generic (and very European) set of features. Cordelia should look a little older, and Elena less delicate-featured.

Suffers from the same sameface problem, but so does everything I draw so let's leave that aside from now. The middle Bel is the most Bel-looking, I think. Top left is a younger pre-canon Bel. Bottom right is from Diplomatic Immunity (a little older, though not much wiser) - "Bel tucked its gray-brown bangs up off its forehead with spread fingers, a familiar gesture; they promptly fell back again, even more heart-catching." I feel your pain, Miles.
Bottom left is that conversation with Ryoval. "Group rates" - should've punched him.

An Elli. One of the quickest sketches in this post, but it's also the one with the closest resemblance to how I see the character.

More Bels. The coloured one is from a prompt, 'check out this box of kittens/puppies/bunnies/ducklings/whatever's cutest to them!'
I guessed hamsters, though Miles was also a strong contender, given that almost this exact scene happened with him popping out of abox bod-pod in The Vor Game.

This one's Nicol. I really liked the image of her in zero gravity with floaty colourful scarves, though I don't think I did it justice. (Featuring my tendency to give everyone Alternative Lifestyle Haircuts.)

I was mostly just trying to figure out how I visualised the Dendarii uniform, but it turned into Bel (predictably). This is one of my favourite Bels that I've drawn - I usually make it more feminine than I mean to.

These are also all Bel. The year I read the Vorkosigan Saga I was working in a tiny local photography/printing shop. It was pretty quiet most of the time, and there was a lot of scrap paper lying around - old receipts, frame inserts, offcuts from the printer and so on. A lot of doodling ensued... they weren't all of Bel, but to be honest, they were about 90% Bel.

Taura and Spike. I'm not sure if it's on Dreamwidth as well, but
hannah wrote some excellent fic about a Vorkosiverse/Buffyverse crossover. And who doesn't love a good vampire/werewolf romance?
